This year is the 130th anniversary of the death of Timothy Trow who died saving a young girl from the freezing waters of the former Newcastle Canal.

We shall be gathering at the monument on London Road just before 11am on Saturday 13th April 2024. I started this memorial event over 10 years ago and it has grown to become a regular feature on the local calendar. We even managed to run Zoom events during the years of Covid-19 lockdowns.

4 year old Jane Ridgeway fell into the former Newcastle Canal opposite the tram terminus by then West End Hotel (now West End Methodist Church and community centre). Timothy, the tram conductor, jumped in to save her despite not being able to swim. He saved her life but drowned in the attempt. He was pulled from the waters but it was too late to save him.

Please join us afterwards for refreshments provided by Unite the Union whose Hanley office is on the street where Timothy lived.
