Frank Soo at Stoke
Frank Soo at Stoke

I had a really interesting time working with the developers of the former Victoria Ground especially when naming the new streets. Discussing former players, managers and other significant people involved with the club over many years with local residents and fans was illuminating. Many names were put forward but none quite as unique as Frank Soo.

The first person from a Chinese heritage to play in the football league.

Frank played 173 times for Stoke City FC between 1933 and 1945 mainly as an inside-left or inside right. From 1938 he was captain and scored 26 goals in all competitions. Obviously, WW2 interrupted this best years with Stoke as he joined the RAF.

The first person of colour to play for England.

Frank played for England in 9 wartime and victory friendlies and also captained the RAF XI on several occasions.

The first person from a East Asian background to manage in England.

Frank managed St Albans City and the then second division Scunthorpe United in England and many teams in Scandanavia including winning the league in Sweden and managing the Norwegian national men’s side.

Locally, he lived in Richmond Street and his first marital home was in Huntley Avenue.

I am raising Frank at Full Council on 19th October 2023 and have worked with The Frank Soo Foundation on my question and credit them with much of the information and photos in this post.
