The growth of Universal Credit in our area has been truly shocking.
The figures from the Department of Work and Pensions show that the number of local people claiming Universal Credit almost doubled in the 5 months to May this year. I have previously written about the Claimant Count for the area and my fears over the large job losses recently. This benefit is notoriously difficult to access and when it is showing such an increase shows the dire state of the economy in our area.
The government need to extend the furlough scheme and look at special schemes for different sectors of the economy. We also need further action locally to improve the supply of jobs. We need to look at innovative ideas so that wealth doesn’t leak away from our area.
