Cllr Andy Platt Standing up for Boothen, Oak Hill, Penkhull, Stoke & West End
Yeaman Street park boost
Back in the 1980’s I was involved in the initial improvements on the park from when it was just a red ash square. My children played on the park but unfortunately it fell into disrepair over the years. In 2011, soon after I was elected, a small amount of money was secured from a local development to improve the park. There was a local consultation and the improvements to the play area followed.
I didn’t want it to stop there, so on the back of the consultation and with the support of the council parks team, I initiated the formation of a “Friends” group of local parents and residents. We leafleted the local streets and formed a committee. It is perhaps the smallest park in the city with such a group.
There have been good periods and less good periods for the group but it is still going and I have always tried to support it in any way I can. The group raised funds to have the main path resurfaced and the street lighting restored. Many events and fundraising have happened on the park over the years and now improvements are due.
The consultation will listen to local people and users of the park on what they think of the ideas.
